In early 2013 Martina and I headed down to Blarney in County Cork and brought home what has since become part of the family, our 1979 Land Rover Series III.
By 2018, it was time for a full respray. We stripped it back to bare aluminium, etch primed it and finished it in BMW NATO green with a classic cream roof. A year later we added a few upgrades, a reskimmed head, Fairey overdrive and a new rear quarter-chassis.
Every weekend it’s out and there’s nothing I enjoy more than an afternoon easing along the lanes of Longford and Roscommon, seeing how far I can travel without touching tarmac. Every bend brings a fresh surprise and every puddle its own small adventure. With only the basics on board of raincoat, wellies, shovel, tow rope and phone — it’s unrushed countryside travel, letting the old Series III amble along at its own pace.
READY FOR SOME GREEN-LANING?
If you feel tempted to try a bit of quiet-lane exploring yourself, we currently have something special on the Ireland Made website: a rare and important private collection of twelve Series Land Rovers now available for sale. Spanning 1951 to 1982 the collection includes 80, 88, 107 and 109-inch Station Wagons and Pickups — the full sweep of early Land Rover history.
Among them are two exceptionally scarce 1956 Fire Tenders assembled in Dublin as CKD units by the Brittains Group on the Naas Road, both with service histories in the County Laois Fire Service.
The remainder were sourced in New Zealand and Australia two decades ago and brought to Ireland, where they’ve been preserved as a single, carefully assembled group. British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificates are available for all vehicles.
This collection offers a remarkable mix of factory-built and CKD-assembled 80, 88, 107, and 109-inch Station Wagons and Pickups.PDF brochures for each Land Rover can be viewed https://irelandmade.ie/#collection-banner For enquiries, simply complete the contact form and if one of them feels right for you, make us an offer.
