In the 1970s and 80s Mercedes-Benz were producing some of the best built cars on the market at a time when engineering excellence ruled the day and cost cutting in a luxury brand was unheard off. Their cars were refined and standard equipment was generous with central locking, powered windows, all round disc brakes and power steering.
The Mercedes-Benz R107 and W126/C126 sports cars were produced from 1971 through to 1989 and few people realised that these cars would become Mercedes longest running models ever, lasting an incredible 18 years of production.
The SL (R107) was a two-seat car with optional folding seats for the rear bench, a detachable roof and optional hardtop and the SEC (W126/C126) derivative was a 2-door hardtop coupe with normal rear seats. The SL (Sports Light) convertibles sold well in USA and the SLC was intended for long distance high-speed touring.
While Jeremy Clarkson attempted to invent a new style of SUV by combining a Land Rover Discovery with the body of a Mercedes SL (R107) convertible and renaming it ‘The Excellent’, these three car enthusiasts from Dublin prefer to preserve their Mercedes in their original and restored condition.
In our video we have two 380SL (R107) one painted in cream and the other in brown and a rare Mercedes 500SEC (W126/C126) painted in smoked silver and all cars with low mileage.
On a recent sunny Sunday morning on Dublin’s Mount Street Crescent beside St Stephen’s church also known as the ‘Pepper Canister’ the three Mercedes cars did some serious posing.
