Homemade Yellow Submarine ordered out off Irish harbour | Season 1 – Episode 43

Floats Jul 28, 2021

We are bringing you one man’s submarine dream. Everyone has a dream, some dreams are riskier than others. In the mid-1980’s one determined Irish man from Dublin realized his life-long dream to submerge under the sea.

Working in a plumber’s yard on Infirmary Road, off Dublin’s Parkgate Street and drawing heavily on his expertise as a plumber, a 22 ft steel-hull single-person submarine was constructed. The submarine was powered by a 1600 cc VW Beetle engine, a snorkel apparatus enabled the air-cooled VW engine to run underwater. Utilizing his plumber’s knowledge of valves and the effects of pressure, the inside of the submarine is compact with everything in easy reach. While is not recorded if this yellow submarine ever actually submerged, there is a record of the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Master stating in no uncertain terms that on safety grounds the submarine and its Captain should vacate the harbour immediately and never come back.
